Mamoru Hosoda’s New film announced for Next Winter

Studio CHIZU and renowned director Mamoru Hosoda (know for The Girl who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, The Boy and the Beast, Mirai) revealed on Monday that a new anime film titled “Scarlet” scheduled for next Winter 2025. This will mark Hosoda’s first new project in four years, following BELLE.

Hosoda is both directing and writing the screenplay for the film, and is also credited with the original concept. He mentioned that the film won’t be traditional 2D animation or “Hollywood-style CG,” but will feature a completely unique visual style. Hosoda also noted that the film will differ in tone from his previous works, incorporating elements of action and romance. Additionally, he revealed that the story is inspired by a “global classic.”

Studio CHIZU is producing the animation once again, with Toho handling the film’s distribution in Japan. The film’s producer Yuichiro Saito stated the film will have worldwide distribution. Sony Pictures will oversee the international release, reportedly presenting it in a “new form for Japanese animation.”
